And the winner is....

If you read my previous post, you know that Cole was involved with two projects - a 4-H project and a science fair project. I will not go into the details about the disappointment with his science fair project, but I will say that we really feel that he was not judged accurately and fairly. He was not upset that he did not win the science fair, but he was heartbroken that the judge did not seem to complete the scoring rubric accurately. After the disappointment of the science fair, Cole was scheduled to spend a Saturday presenting his 4-H project on origami at the regional competition. He traveled on a bus (with Mike in the car following the bus) to the 4-H camp to enjoy time with other 4-H kids and complete their presentations.
(These are the kids presenting in the regional competetion from our county.  Cole is towards the right side in a black jacket).

I stayed home with Alex and Anna Grace while Mike and Cole spent the morning playing basketball and hanging out with kids from all over the northern half of our state.

In the afternoon, just before Cole was scheduled to present, Mike called me on the phone to tell me that Cole had changed into his khaki pants, sweater, and dress shoes and was ready to present but then he accidentally kicked one of his dress shoes into the lake and they had to retrieve it with a long stick! His good Sperry was soaking wet!! Thankfully, he had a pair of old Nikes with him to wear, but he definately was not dressed as nicely as he had planned. Mike called me laughing to tell me that Cole kept saying, "It is a good thing that Mommy didn't come. She would not be very happy with me!"
Cole did a great job with his presentation and it did not seem to matter that he was not wearing proper shoes.
He was so excited that he won first place in his category!
We are proud of him for taking the initiative to complete this project, practice it every night, and present it two different times. Public speaking is a life skill that will help him in his future, and he is excited that he won the county level and regional level competitions with his project. Several nights later after the competition, his 4-H leaders hosted a skate night for all of the 5th graders.

Cole is growing up so quickly, but he has mixed feelings about finishing his last few months of elementary school. Even though he is excited to start middle school in the fall, I think he is a little sad to see the end of his elementary school years. He has become involved in producing the morning video announcements for his school and is involved in the safety patrols. We have been talking a lot about how he can be involved in clubs and activities at the middle school, but he is a little sad that he will be leaving elementary school behind soon.

Origami and Generosity

So, what do origami and generosity have in common??? They are both the topics of Cole's recent projects. Cole's first project that he completed for the local 4-H was on folding paper ninja stars. He created a backboard and presented a demonstration to a panel of judges in a county competition and won first place! Now he is headed to the regional competition with is project where he will compete against kids from all over our region of the state.
Cole's other project that he recently completed was the science fair project for his school. This project was much more involved and time-consuming. We talked for a long time about what he wanted to do for his science fair project, and we finally decided that we wanted to do something that would benefit others. So, Cole tested the generosity of others by collecting food for the local food bank in 3 different income level neighborhoods.
His project involved a lot of research and hours and hours of knocking on doors asking people to donate food. In the end, his prediction that the middle income level would be the most generous was wrong. The lowest income level was the most friendly, appreciative, and generous to others! We don't know if Cole has won an award for his project yet, but it does not really matter.
Cole learned so much about giving to others, and he was able to see first-hand how some people who have far less than us with our fully stocked pantry will give until they have very little left to give. Cole will always remember the sweet old lady who only had 6 cans in her cabinet, but gave 3 of them away... and, the single mom who had 5 kids all line up in the grass with their arms full of food waiting for Cole as he pulled his red wagon down the street. He learned how to conduct an interview when he interviewed the director of the local food shelter, and he was so excited to deliver his cans that he collected.
He wrote page after page of observations, research, and calculations in his log book and typed a report that was over 20 pages long. I believe Cole will always remember the lessons that he learned about generosity and helping others.

The Year of the Dragon

Tonight we celebrated Chinese New Year with family and friends. Both sets of grandparents were able to come tonight along with Anna Grace's beloved babysitter, "Meggie" and her boyfriend. Mike and I planned our menu to include some traditional Chinese New Years dishes and some family favorites. We had homemade dumplings so symbolize reunion of family, spareribs, fried rice, Chinese noodles with chicken to symbolize long life, and Mongolian beef. We also had Asian pears and oranges to symbolize good fortune. Anna Grace was excited to wear one of her dresses that we bought her in China.
Alex and I spent the afternoon making the homemade dumplings. As we sat together folding the dumplings one by one, he talked to me about how much he enjoys cooking new foods and learning about new holidays. I was reminded of how much my dad loved to cook big Chinese meals with my mom on a Sunday afternoon when I was a kid. He loved to be creative in the kitchen and I know if he was still with us, he would have embraced his little Chinese granddaughter and all of the Chinese customs that we are trying to learn.
So, it was with great pride and love for my parents that I set the table with some of the dishware that my parents used for their big Chinese feasts when I was a child. I really love having the chance to embrace Anna Grace's heritage and intertwine it with our own family traditions.
One of the most exciting parts of the evening was the cake that my mom brought.
She and her friend, Maggie, spent the evening last night icing and decorating a dragon cake!
The scales of the dragon were made of m & m's and orange candies. Alex colored the head of the dragon and we attached spiral candles to the dragon's mouth so that it could have real flames!
We had a great time tonight celebrating the Year of the Dragon!

A quick update

Ok- so I know that I have been slacking off on my blogging lately. The kid's schedules have been so busy that by the time I get everything accomplished in the day that needs to get done, I am ready to crash. The only reason that I have a few minutes of quiet right now is because I am home from work with Anna Grace who has a cold. She is napping and the boys are at school- they will be home in less that 30 minutes so I better hurry with my blogging. They will be busy working on homework, eating an early supper, and getting ready for church before I know it. I am posting some pictures of the kids enjoying time with their Christmas presents. Cole has been on several rides with his new mountain bike. It has been a great activity for the boys and Mike to do together.
Alex has not had as many opportunities to use the kayak that he got for Christmas because of the cold weather.

He quickly found that his paddle tends to allow water to slide down into his lap while he is paddling around our cold little lake. After just a few minutes of paddling, his pants were soaked! I think he will wait for some warmer weather to fully enjoy time in his kayak!
Still, I got some great pictures of him out there paddling around the lake while Cole and Anna Grace watched from the shore.
Anna Grace has been enjoying her art easel. She can paint on one side and use chalk on the other. Just yesterday she was painting dragons for Chinese New Year.

Speaking of Chinese New Year, we are getting ready for a big family dinner Sunday night. Last Saturday, Anna Grace and I met my mom (while the boys were on a mountain biking trip) at the Asian grocery store to get the things that we need for Chinese New Year. We are getting ready to celebrate the year of the dragon!

Broken Hearts and Busted Lips

Yesterday was a really hard day for our family.  We have had a sweet little puff-ball of a dog for several years and yesterday, our little Harley had to move to a new home.  Harley is a Shih Tzu and he is loved by the whole family.  He loved to tuck the boys in each night and follow Anna Grace around the house all day.  There were many days when Harley would be in the middle of a tea party or would be dressed up in a tutu.  However, in the last several months, he has become more and more aggressive with Anna Grace.  I would see him get agitated with her and tell her to give him some space, but he would just follow her to the next room constantly under her feet.  He started growling at her from time to time and has been giving her what I think are warning bites- nothing hard, but the bites have been on the face.  It is impossible to keep the two of them separated without keeping Harley locked up all of the time and that is not fair to him.  We tried several weeks of increasing his exercise, but that did not help either.  He bit Anna Grace twice in the last week- once on the hand and once on the face.  I was so scared that he was going to finally bite her with more than a warning.  He went to a really loving home with no kids, but our family is crushed.  The boys and I were in tears for most of the day yesterday knowing that Harley was going to be leaving.
Cole and Alex decided that they did not want to be home when Harley's new family came to get him, so we agreed that Mike would stay home and I would take the kids out for supper- which leads me up to the "busted lip" part of the title of today's blog post. We were getting ready to leave, and I was helping Anna Grace with her tights after she went potty when her feet slipped out from under her on the tile floor of our bathroom.  She fell flat on her face, and there was an instant pool of blood.  I have never seen so much blood come out of a child.  Anna Grace is typically very tough, but she was crying hysterically and for a while we could not even tell where the blood was coming from.  It took about 15 minutes for the bleeding to stop and none of our neighbors who are nurses were home to help us figure out what to do.  We knew that Harley's new family was going to arrive at any minute, the boys were waiting to leave for supper, and Anna Grace needed to get to a doctor.  Thankfully, the neighbors who live behind us took the boys while I took Anna Grace to the Immediate First Care to see if she needed stitches.
Anna Grace did not need stitches, but her mouth is very swollen and bruised inside and out.  The tooth that had been pushed back a bit has shifted back into place this morning, and I think in a few days she will be better.  She just finished a big homemade smoothie for her breakfast.  We have reports that Harley is happy, but the boys and I are still feeling heartbroken.  We know that it was the right thing to do- for Anna Grace and for Harley, but we feel like a part of our family is missing.  Cole and I were talking last night as I was tucking him in bed about how sometimes doing the right thing to do is the hardest.  Please pray for us that in the coming days our hearts will start to mend and Anna Grace's mouth heals.

Merry Christmas

It has taken me a few days to get myself organized enough to think about doing a blog post about Christmas.  Mike was joking Christmas night after all of the presents had been opened and said, "Close the blinds on the front of our house.  We look like an episode from the show Hoarders!"  We did not go overboard with our gifts for the kids, but when you pile in all of the gifts from 2 sets of grandparents and other relatives, the house becomes a little crazy!

All kidding aside, we really had a great Christmas.  Following our normal tradition, we spent the evening of Christmas Eve at my mom's house with my brothers and their families.  The little kids played Candy Land while waiting for everyone to get ready to eat and open presents.
I caught Anna Grace sneaking a treat before we were ready to eat (she insisted on wearing a Santa hat since my niece and nephew were wearing their Santa hats)

We started taking a picture of my oldest nephew each year with this snowman when he was just a little baby. The snowman was huge compared to my nephew's size back then. It is fun to see how much the kids have grown (in size and in number!!)
After Christmas Eve at my mom's house, it was time to go home to get ready for Santa.  Anna Grace seemed to be on overload from the sugar and excitement of Christmas because she talked and sang songs the entire way home...the entire hour and 15 minutes...I had dressed her in her new Christmas pjs before we left my mom's house in hopes that she would fall asleep on the way home, but she kept looking out the window to see if she could find Santa in the sky.  Santa did finally come after all of the kids were nestled snug in their beds.  He brought a new bike for Cole, a kayak for Alex, and for Anna Grace, a little bike, art easel, and the Lala Loopsy that she has been talking about for a month.

The kids were really excited Christmas morning when they saw what Santa had brought.

After Christmas morning presents and breakfast, Mike's parents joined us for church.  It was nice to take a break from all of the presents and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas.

Finally, it was time to head to Mike's parents for Christmas with his side of our family.  His parent's house is the gathering place for all of the cousins, aunts, uncles, and other extended family so we always have a big crowd when we go there.

By time we were finished, we were all exhausted!  Our living room looked like it had been taken over by pink Disney princesses and you could not see the dining room table or floor.  The day after Christmas was spent organizing the house back to some degree of normalcy and playing with all of the new toys and presents.

Christmas Cheer

School is finally out, so it was time to start some Christmas baking. I enjoy making some goodies for a few of our neighbors each year, and this year the boys were a big help. Cole picked out a recipe for cookies & cream fudge, and we all thought it would be fun to make pretzels dipped in chocolate and sprinkles. Cole and Alex each made a batch of the fudge (with my help of course).
Anna Grace helped by crushing the Oreo cookies.
While the fudge chilled in the refrigerator, Alex and Anna Grace assembled the gift boxes for the fudge. Then it was time to make the pretzels. We thought that it would be something simple and fun, but we quickly learned that it was not as easy as it seemed!
Our first batch of the pretzels ended up dripping gloppy goops of sprinkles everywhere before we finally learned to let the chocolate cool a little before adding the sprinkles. As you can see, we made quite a mess.
I think I will be sweeping up sprinkles for a week!
Then, it was time to deliver some of our goodies. Cole was in charge of delivering the fudge, Alex delivered the pretzels, and Anna Grace delivered a card to each doorstep.
The kids are getting really excited about Christmas, but Anna Grace is worried about the rainy weather.  She is concerned that Santa is going to make a mess in the house because he will be so wet!!  Hopefully we will have dry weather for Christmas Eve!
